John Bel Edwards reduced 22 prison sentences, including 15 murderers, in 2016

Louisiana continues to lead the nation in highest murder rate per capita,1 but Governor John Bel Edwards is reducing prison sentences of violent offenders at record rates.

Edwards granted 22 prison commutations during 2016, and fifteen of those 22 prisoners are convicted murderers.2 For historical perspective, Edwards’ three predecessors (Mike Foster, Kathleen Blanco & Bobby Jindal) commuted only one sentence combined during their first years in office. And more sentence reductions are on the horizon if Edwards has his way.
